School Wide Genre Reading Challenge

Dear Manning Community
Starting in January, Mrs. Cahill and Mr. Demerjian will be doing a school wide Genre Challenge. The challenge is to have our students read at least 3 books of the genre of the month. They will have to fill out a small form which will include, their name, grade, title of the book, author, genre type and short description of what they read.  The summary forms are available in their homerooms or library.  They must be turned in no later than the day before the Birthday Book Assembly.
A genre is a category or type of literature. For example some genre’s are: Fairytales, Myths, Mysteries, Biography, Historical Fiction, Fables, Science Fiction, Poetry, Informational Text. There are many more!
Mr. Demerjian will post on the bulletin board outside the library “suggested’’ reading by grade level to help the students choose books. This is only suggested. They may read any book in the genre. At the Birthday Book Assemblies, we will call up all children that have met the challenge and recognize the hard work they have done!
We are doing this to broaden our student’s knowledge in literature.
This is not mandatory, but please encourage your child to participate!
Every month there will be a different genre.
January – Traditional Literature which includes -Fables, Folktales, Myths, Fairytales, Tall Tales
February – Biography
March –   Informational Text
April – Poetry
May – Realistic Fiction
